Pelvic Ultrasound
Durham and Raleigh, NC Fertility Centers’ Pelvic Ultrasound Procedure
Transvaginal ultrasounds can detect uterine fibroids, hydrosalpinx, endometrial thickness, ovarian tumors and ovarian cysts, as well as other abnormalities such as a pelvic infection that may require further evaluation and treatment.
Transvaginal ultrasound is also very useful in viewing pregnancies as early as six and a half weeks from last menses (four and a half weeks from conception). By this time a heartbeat is detectable by ultrasound.
What to Expect
Our clinic uses transvaginal ultrasound to evaluate the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. The probe on the transvaginal ultrasound is less than an inch in diameter and should cause less discomfort than a routine speculum exam.
By using a vaginal probe instead of an abdominal probe, we are able to obtain images that are very clear and show very small details.
During the monitoring phase of treatment, you will have several ultrasounds to evaluate progress.
Sonohysterography
Sonohysterography, or saline contrast hysterography, is a diagnostic test involving the use of saline as a contrast agent inside the uterine cavity.
This contrast is visualized by vaginal ultrasound in the clinic. The contour of the endometrial cavity can be assessed using this technique. Other types of contrast media have also been shown to be helpful in evaluation of the fallopian tubes.
